Rods and Luck
Buy the Lightweight Small Fishing Rod first (buffed in 1.0.5). If catching got harder after Luck gains, that is the known Luck-vs-rod effect — press the Diary centre to lower Luck.
Rods are your main gear in SCREENSIDE FISHER, and Luck is the stat sitting behind them. Together they decide what bites and how the reel minigame feels — and patch 1.0.5 changed how Luck is set, specifically because a too-high Luck stat could make fish almost impossible to catch.
The bite is the signal; the reel is the minigame. Rod power and Luck both feed into how that plays out.
What is known about the rods today
- Lightweight Small Fishing Rod — the friendly early pick. Patch 1.0.5 explicitly "adjusted the performance" of this rod by increasing its base power, so it fishes better than it did at launch.
- The top-shelf rod — every shop line has a ceiling, and the rod shop's most expensive model is the community's long-term savings goal. Players chasing it describe it as adding automatic-fishing conveniences, which is exactly the upgrade a desktop companion wants.
- Everything in between — rod power is a ladder: each upgrade widens what you can pull out of the water. When a catch keeps breaking off, the honest answer is usually "come back with a better rod."
Luck, and the 1.0.5 Diary fix
Luck is a leveling stat, and maxing it is its own achievement ("Lucky Black Cat" — 15.5% of players). Higher Luck is good news for interesting catches, but the launch version had a nasty interaction: **when Luck got too high relative to your rod's performance, catching fish became harder, not easier.** The fish got trickier to reel in exactly when you had earned the right to catch better things.
Patch 1.0.5 fixed this by making Luck adjustable: press the centre of the Diary to set your Luck level. In practice this is a dial, and you can turn it down:
- After any big Luck gain, catch a few fish as normal.
- If the timing minigame suddenly feels unfair for your current rod, open the Diary, press the centre, and lower Luck.
- Raise it again once your rod catches up.
Which rod should you buy first?
Buy the Lightweight Small Fishing Rod as your first upgrade. It is cheap, and the 1.0.5 power buff gives it real headroom.
From there, the plan is to save for the top rod without starving the kitchen: the cooking and recipes page shows how dishes multiply the value of every catch, and the lottery and money page has the earning routes ranked.
